The Myth of "Christian" America

While written in the 1980s, The Search for Christian America is still a good read and particularly poignant right now as evangelicals try to navigate the choppy waters of this presidential campaign. The authors (Mark Noll, Nathan Hatch and George Marsden) write:

"The more serious hindrance to positive Christian action in the present is the distorted and overinflated view of America as a distinctively Christian nation...Similarly, if we perpetuate the sinful behavior and the moral blind spots of our predecessors, even if these predecessors were Christians, it keeps us from understanding scriptural mandates for action today."
